Piercing Aftercare Instructions

WARNING: It is vital that you faithfully follow ALL aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing of your new piercing. CONTINUED PAIN, FEELING WARM TO THE TOUCH, EXTREME SWELLING, DISCHARGE/PUSS, REDNESS THAT SPREADS FROM PIERCING SITE, SWOLLEN LYMPH NODES, AND FEVER ARE NOT A NORMAL RESULT OF A PIERCING AND ARE SIGNS OF INFECTION. SHOULD ANY OF THESE SIGNS PERSIST, REMOVE THE JEWELRY AND CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS EXTREMELY URGENT WITH ALL PIERCINGS, ESPECIALLY CARTILAGE, AS SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS CAN RESULT.

IF YOUR JEWELRY HAS BEEN “SWALLOWED” UP BY THE SKIN DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE IT OUT YOURSELF, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.

Approximate healing times: Leave original piercing jewelry in for

EARLOBE: 4-8 weeks

HELIX/CARTILAGE: 4-12 months

NOSTRIL/SEPTUM: 2-6 months

DAITH: 4-12 months

TRAGUS: 4-12 months

ROOK: 4-12 months

BELLYBUTTON: 6-12 months

NIPPLES: 8-12 months

These are approximate, average healing times. Human bodies are individual, and times can vary greatly, are not guaranteed, and may be complicated by certain medical conditions*

Proper hygiene during healing period:

  1. Always cleanse hands prior to touching a fresh piercing.
  2. Cleanse the pierced area TWICE daily using a clean cotton swab and a proper saline piercing aftercare solution. Avoid over-the-counter products such as alcohol, peroxide, bactine, or Neosporin as these are harsh on the delicate tissue healing around jewelry.
    1. Over cleaning can cause more harm than good, minimal care is best.
    2. It is NOT necessary to rotate or move the jewelry back and forth. If the jewelry moves freely that is okay, but make sure not to force it to move.
  3. Minimize picking, moving, twisting.
  4. The piercing will scab around the sides and accumulate some discharge (typically a yellowish/white color) which can harden into a crust. This means your piercing is healing HEALTHILY, don’t panic. However, picking this away can cause irritation, prolonged healing time, and leave a more pronounced scar when healed. Gently wash away with water or piercing safe solution.
  5. Try not to sleep on your fresh piercing, this may also cause prolonged healing, irritation, and your piercing may start to heal in a crooked position. Using a donut pillow is very helpful.
  6. With a daith, conch, and/or rook piercing, do NOT wear earbuds, air pods, etc. until your piercing is healed.
  7. Some irritation, redness, tenderness, white/clear/pink fluid, and even “piercing bumps” are normal as well, however if any of these worsen or become more severe (see above warning signs) consult a physician immediately.
  8. Keep the pierced area DRY and CLEAN. Moist environments breed bacteria and can cause severe infection. Immediately cleanse after using shampoo, hair products, spraying cologne, and after swimming/hot tub or exercise. For the first 7-10 days, try to completely avoid exposing it to shared/public bodies of water. Keep hair away from ears whenever possible during the healing period.
  9. Take extra care when removing clothing to avoid the new piercing jewelry getting caught. Exercise care when participating in sports or rough play.

If you develop a “piercing bump” (sometimes referred to as a keloid) please reach out! I have a ton of information on it, and I have something that may help with healing!

If your jewelry feels tight with no room to breathe, come and see me! We can switch it out for a longer post.
